Visual area The visual cortex processes all the information gathered by a capuchin’s eyes, and this is the first response of the brain to witnessing an unfair situation. The impulse travels to the rear of the brain via the optic nerve that connects to the back of the eye. Emotion centre Once the visual information has been processed, a capuchin experiences an emotional response to unfairness. The limbic system in the centre of the brain deals with hormones and chemicals that are linked to emotions such as anger or joy. Planning and memory After experiencing an emotional reaction, it’s important that the capuchin remembers which member of the group acts selfishly or unfairly and make a mental note to avoid working with them.
