A great big “I told you so” appears to be reverberating around the globe. The recent computer glitch triggered by a flawed software update provided to Microsoft crashed systems worldwide. Among the systems impacted by this global tech outage were airlines, banks, gasoline stations, hospitals, and just about any merchant who isn’t capable of accepting cash payments. The culprit was an update by the cybersecurity group CrowdStrike. About 8.5 million Windows software-using devices were directly impacted, less than one percent of all machines using Windows. The percentage may be small, but these devices in turn run many critical services. Among those services is the capability to accept non-cash payments electronically. Fiat money dominates modern economics. Specie is dead—or is it? Could there be a place for some limited form of physical specie currency in today’s society? There is some evidence specie may be attempting a comeback in some form in places where specie rather than fiat currency really could or does matter. The United States “temporarily suspended” the last vestiges of our specie currency in 1971. It wasn’t unusual during the plagues in Medieval Europe for someone pulling a cart to ring a bell and shout “Bring out your dead.” Plague victims would be dumped into the cart, and then disposed of accordingly. It appears as if the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (Philippines Central Bank) may be taking a cue from the time of the plagues. This time it’s worn or damaged Philippine coins and bank notes that are being called out as being the dead. Perhaps the central bank isn’t ringing a bell and parading a cart throughout the nation, but the bank is determined to rid commerce of physical currency that isn’t fit to be handled. It’s expensive to make money. This is true in business, but it is also true if you are a central bank needing to meet the demands for physical cash in circulation. The Philippines is trying to resolve its coin shortage by encouraging people to empty their piggy banks while simultaneously encouraging using electronic transfers to alleviate the need for cash. Belgium is finding they have more in common with the Philippines dilemma than they might wish. According to the European Central Bank, physical cash was used for 59 percent of all point-of-sale transactions within the eurozone during 2022, this being down from 72 percent during 2019. Czechoslovakia Rarity Among Hundreds of World and Ancient Coins in Sale

A Czechoslovakia rarity expected to realize six figures is among more than 700 ancient and world coins and medals in an upcoming sale. Stack’s Bowers’ Global Showcase Auction series includes sessions B, D, and F, held August 12-17, 2024. Among the top highlights of the auction series is a Czechoslovakia 1938 10 Ducats graded NGC MS 67 (Session D, lot 42088), with an estimate of $100,000 to $150,000. According to the auction house, less than 200 were struck and few of these gold coins are known to have survived the turbulence of World War II and the Communist era. Reports of their activities have provided compulsive reading - and sensational reporting – in the mainstream media worldwide. The European Union has decided to impose a cash payment limit. Starting in 2027, cash transactions over €10,000 will be banned across Europe, although individual countries can set lower limits if they choose. Many euro countries are actively working on their own measures to reduce cash usage. One small and inconspicuous euro country, Estonia, is demonstrating how this can be done. Estonia, one of the States on the Baltic Sea, regained its independence following the collapse of the Soviet Union and introduced its own currency, the “Kroon.” Estonians cherished their currency and reluctantly adopted the euro in 2011. The winning coin’s obverse features a bristlecone pine, a species native to California, Nevada and Utah. It is thought to be one the oldest living organisms on Earth, living up to 5,000 years. New Zealand Launches New Brand Agoro

The New Zealand Mint announced they are changing their collectibles experience by introducing Agoro. The New Zealand Mint still backs the new brand but separates the two to provide more focus to its customers. Agoro is named from the symbol for silver (Ag) and the Spanish and Italian word for gold (oro). “It became evident that the dual focus of the New Zealand Mint brand, encompassing both bullion trading and consumer collectibles, was not optimally positioned to serve the unique needs of our collectors,” states the announcement.
