CASH, YES, ELECTRONIC PAYMENTS, NO IN BULGARIA

Sweden may be leading the march towards a cashless society, but Bulgaria is going in the other direction. The Bulgarian National Bank, or Българска народна банка, recently announced that as of the end of July, the southeastern European nation reached a new record for physical cash that is in circulation. This is the sixth straight month in which the circulation of coins and bank notes has increased. The largest increase in coinage use is in the 1- and 2-leva denominations. The values of these two denominations are now estimated to be at 195 million and 94 million leva, respectively, up from about 190 million and 90.5 million leva at the end of 2023.
