Shipwrecked Coins Land at Heritage Auctions’ Sale

As the pirate saying goes, “Dead men tell no tales.” However, it appears their coins had stories to tell at the online “Spotlight: Shipwreck & Treasure World Coins Showcase” auction (#61465) hosted by Heritage Auctions on January 20, 2025. The auction realized $326,529 from its listed 210 numismatic goods (coins, gold bars, gold and pearl crosses, and gold nuggets) that were found on or are associated with shipwrecks. “This thematic sale helped solidify Heritage as a leading venue for shipwreck coins and relics,” explains Thomas Ribeiro at Heritage Auctions. “The dedicated shipwreck auctions have fostered relationships with not only collectors wishing to share their treasures, but also with divers, archeologists, and others involved in sea salvaging, giving Heritage the opportunity to bring to market pieces from newly discovered wrecks.” A…
