An essai is usually a test strike, while a pattern is a suggested design for a future coin. Patterns are seldom adopted without some changes having been made to the proposed designs. An essai is an experimental coin but isn’t meant to circulated.

Numismatics also includes military medals. Consider numismatics to be a discipline, and as such it encompasses and relates to other disciplines. This is why archaeology and other interests pay attention to coins. Seals date at least to the time of Urik in Mesopotamia at least 5,000 years ago. Ancient cylinder seals occasionally appear in ancient coin auctions.
