Switzerland’s Shooting Talers for 2022

Switzerland’s annual shooting taler is now available for preorder in advance of its February release date. Swiss Shooting Festivals date back to the 15th century when festival participants used crossbows in shooting contests. The legend of William Tell recalls this tradition. Another tradition since the 19th century is silver and gold versions of the traditional coins used to help mark and promote the event. In modern times, cantonal and regional shooting festivals are held every year and a Federal Shooting Festival takes place every five years. In 2022, a cantonal Shooting Festival is scheduled for June 24 to July 10 in the canton of Uri. The 50 franc silver proof coin sold out last year and late orders were left unfilled. IMPORTANT MEDIEVAL FIND IN AUSTRIA The discovery of a hoard of ancient, gold, or undersea treasure coins gets media attention, but important hoards of medieval and modern coins that get less publicity are occasionally discovered as well. On Oct. 27 it was announced that more than 6,000 silver medieval Austrian coins were discovered while renovating a farm in Rainbach, Upper Austria. The coins are now at the Linz Schlossmuseum or OÖ Lande-Kultur GmbH Museum where they may at some future date be displayed. According to a museum spokesman, the find is “one of the most extensive, late medieval complexes from a rural milieu in our state and beyond.” The coins “were wrapped in fabric and kept in a clay lidded pot,” according to the same spokesman. “As a hiding place, the owner chose a…

WHAT WAS IT like in the 1830s? From a planetary perspective there had been constant war since ancient times. There is a Wikipedia article “List of Wars.” The 1830s and 1840s list has more than 50 wars for each decade. Quite a few conflicts took place in and around India. There was a war between the Gurkhas and the Sikhs in 1809, and an Anglo-Nepalese war in 1816. There was a Sino-Sikh war in 1842, the same year as the First Opium War. Three wars between the Sikh Empire and the British East India Company: 1820, 1846 and 1849. The Sikhs also fought the Afghans in 1837. All the fighting ruined the Sikhs, but that’s another story. ONE OF THE most interesting series of copper coins struck in Imperial Russia is the Baroque kopecks of 1755–1757. Their size and beauty have long made them a favorite of collectors, both in Russia and abroad. The road to this special coinage was a long one, however, and began several centuries before. During the 15th century several Russian city-states issued small coins of copper called puls, but after the early 1500s these ceased to be issued, perhaps because of the ease of counterfeiting. It was not until the mid–1650s that the copper was again used on a regular basis in Russia. War with Poland had erupted in 1654 and the cost of funding this conflict was very great. Are Elongated Coins Legal?

What is the difference between an essai and a pattern? An essai is usually a test strike, while a pattern is a suggested design for a future coin. Patterns are seldom adopted without some changes having been made to the proposed designs. An essai is an experimental coin but isn’t meant to circulated. I’ve seen lead and wax seals included in numismatic auctions. Numismatics includes tokens and medals, but why seals? Numismatics also includes military medals. Consider numismatics to be a discipline, and as such it encompasses and relates to other disciplines. This is why archaeology and other interests pay attention to coins. PRICES REALIZED FOR numismatic rarities in Sedwick’s Nov. 4-5 Treasure Auction 30 surpassed $4.20 million, the third consecutive record-breaking auction for the company. The sale was held both online and in-person in Winter Park, Fla. The top lot in the sale was a very rare gold 4 excelentes struck in Segovia, Spain during the reign of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella graded NGC AU 50 that realized $78,000 during the second day of the sale. The pre-sale estimate was $30,000 and up. Beyond its numismatic rarity, the well-struck design features the busts of the famous king and queen who were notable for funding Columbus’ expedition to the New World. STEPHEN ALBUM RARE COINS (SARC) will hold its Auction 42 at its offices in Santa Rosa, California across four days from January 20 to 23, 2022. Featured in the sale is the Joe Sedillot Collection (Part I) which includes a wide array of type coins from numerous countries, many of which are in choice condition. Dutch Coin of Many Names Gone for 80 Years

THE FIRST 2½ cents coin issued for the Netherlands was struck in 1877 under King William III. It was a popular workhorse denomination and stayed in circulation for 64 years. The last regular bronze 2 ½ cents left the Rijksmunt in 1941 and now, 80 years later the Royal Dutch Mint will release a tribute to this special denomination, an original bronze 2 ½ cents coin will be reissued in a collectible coin card at the end of October in 2021. The 2 ½ cents are known by many names: “halve stuiver”, “vierduitstuk” en “plak”. It is clear where the term “halve stuiver” comes from: 2 ½ is after all half of 5 (5 cents was called a “stuiver”).
