Only a few weeks into the new year of 1837 came one of those events that continues to fascinate historians and those interested in world literature. Russia’s foremost writer, Alexander Pushkin, was killed in a duel, fighting for the honor of his wife. Had he lived, Russian literature would have been incomparably richer.
The other major event of the year was the completion of the first railway line linking St. Petersburg and Tsarskoe Selo, a former town that houses the Alexander and Catherine palaces. This was an omen of things to come for the great Imperial Russia railway system.
