The late John Jay Pittman once told me he was shown one of the errant U.S. 1933 $20 double eagle coins while Pittman was on a trip in Europe. Pittman said he refused to physically hold the coin due to the fear of litigation that could result from having handled a coin that was illegal to own. Today, only a single example of this coin is legal to possess. Increasingly, provenance matters. The seizure of coins due to a lack of provenance has been once more in the news due to actions taken by authorities in Italy and the United States.
