Florence McCorkle-Eury closed her eyes as her pastor’s words swept through the church. “Extend love, brothers and sisters,” he said. “To everyone you can.” As the Bessemer City, North Carolina, resident nodded in agreement, Florence felt her heart stir as it never had before. I want to help, she thought excitedly. But where do I begin? The question echoed in her mind as she offered rides home to fellow congregants. “Thank you,” a neighborhood boy smiled, hopping into her car. As she drove, Florence chatted with her young passenger and discovered that the boy’s family had been homeless for six months. “We have a house now,” he said softly. “But we don’t have any beds to sleep in.” Instantly, Florence knew that she’d found her answer: Start right where you are.
