Right after I’d decided to start keeping a gratitude journal, my father became very ill and passed away. Suddenly, I had no desire to count my blessings anymore. I had just lost one of the most important people in my life. How could I feel grateful now? In fact, I was consumed by guilt. Each day, while Dad had been hospitalized, I took my mother to visit him—but on the night that he passed away, there had been a terrible storm that prevented us from getting to the hospital.
