Drifting off to sleep, 42-year-old Kathleen O’Keefe-Kanavos fell into a vivid dream. A man who looked like a Franciscan monk in a long hooded robe approached her. “Come with me,” he said softly. “We have something to tell you.” Kathleen followed him to another room, where two others awaited. One took her hand and placed it on her right breast. “You have cancer right here,” he stated. “Feel it? Ask your doctor for more tests.” In a cold sweat, Kathleen bolted awake. Her gynecologist had given her the results of her annual Pap smear and mammo gram a few days before, and all had been perfectly normal.
