EASY DOES IT Clearing dead stems and leaves from herbaceous plants and grasses? To save yourself a trip to the dump or the compost heap, try the chop ’n’ drop method. Cut the dead material into small pieces and scatter on top of the soil. This works like a mulch, trapping moisture in the soil, and keeps sheltering insects safe. As it breaks down over time, it adds goodness to the earth too. MAKE MINE A MOCHA This year’s Pantone colour of the year is Mocha Mousse, a creamy-brown confection like the froth on the top of a cappuccino.
