The United Nations adopted International Women’s Day on 8 March 1975. But its roots go back to New York in 1908, when 15,000 women marched for shorter working hours, better pay and the right to vote. German socialist activist Clara Zetkin proposed the idea of an International Women’s Day (IWD) in 1910, and the first IWD was held in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland in 1911.
