THE STORY SO FAR Somerset, winter 1908. A strike over pay for the carting boys at a coal mine ends in violence when protesters are shot at by Edwin Kelsey, the mine owner’s son. One of those slightly wounded was Caleb Yewdall, brother to Dorcas, who keeps house for him and their 14-year-old brother Joe. At the assizes, Edwin Kelsey escapes a charge of wounding, and it is the miners who are charged with riotous assembly. Caleb and five others are sentenced to between three and six months in prison. Outside the court, Dorcas despairs until Albert, a young PC, appears. Albert was part of a detachment sent from the other side of the county to keep order during the strike.
