Maria set the alarm early so they could go out for breakfast in Tromsø before joining the ship.
‘Come on, lazybones,’ she said, rousing Steve. ‘There’s a place around the corner that does brown goat’s cheese waffles.’
‘Sounds disgusting!’ Steve mumbled. ‘I think I’d rather stay in bed.’
‘It’s traditional,’ she went on. ‘Come on, where’s your sense of adventure?’
She dragged her reluctant husband to the cafe where, determined to eat like the locals, she ordered smoked fish-roe paste with hard-boiled eggs.
‘Rather you than me,’ said Steve as he tucked happily into his bacon sandwich.
‘Isn’t the whole point of travelling to try new things?’ Maria asked.
‘Not if they smell like cat food,’ Steve chuckled.
