It’s only four years since the remote shingle spit became Suffolk’s first breeding colony of grey seals, after they discovered it during lockdown, when it was largely undisturbed by people or boats. Now Orford Ness is closed and protected during the breeding season of October to March, to encourage their annual return, and over 130 pups were born in 2023-24.
