Traces of the past
It’s extraordinary how much the British landscape, which feels very much as if it’s fashioned by nature, is in reality largely created by us – the small ancient fields of the west of England, the sinuous stone walls that frame the Yorkshire Dales, or the sublime treeless grandeur of so much of the Scottish Highlands. And what we’ve taken from underground over the centuries has had an impact too – you can see surface disturbance, and spoil left in particular by coal mining in the Scottish lowlands, the north of England, the Midlands, Wales and in Kent.
