Q My GP prescribed hormone replacement therapy (HRT), as I had menopausal symptoms after my periods stopped two years ago. I can’t tolerate the progesterone tablet, but I’m doing really well with the oestrogen – it’s totally stopped my flushes. Does it matter that I don’t take the progesterone? A Yes! If you have a womb you must take progesterone regardless of when your periods stopped. Taking oestrogen on its own can thicken the lining of the womb and increase your risk of endometrial cancer. It’s essential you take the progesterone, as the consequences can be very serious. If you haven’t been taking it for a long time, I suggest you tell your doctor exactly how long, as they are likely to refer you for a scan. Don’t get on…
