When BBC3 announced that the majority of its new comedies were made by women, it was a landmark moment in mirth. It was 2021, and the channel revealed women were starring in, writing or creating 58% of its TV comedies. ‘This marks a monumental achievement and is testament to the fact that, increasingly, most pioneering and exciting new voices in comedy are female,’ said BBC comedy boss Kate Daughton. From the Edinburgh Festival to clubs across the country, more women are grabbing the mics as stand-ups too. So please welcome to the stage some of our favourite queens of quips.
