A game-changing tool or an expensive fad? Rhiannon Derbyshire investigates at-home light therapy

You’ve probably seen them popping up on your Instagram feed and even your favourite Netflix shows – celebrities strapped into sinister-looking masks, glowing in an ominous red light. While it may seem like a sudden social media fad, light therapy has been used for decades in salons – the boom comes from the at-home tools becoming available and (somewhat) more affordable. But can a light bulb really transform your skin in the same way a cream or serum can? ‘While it may feel as though nothing is happening, LED is very powerful,’ says super-facialist Sarah Chapman. ‘It uses controlled wavelengths of light energy to target specific areas to trigger certain responses.’ Each wavelength appears as different colours, which trigger different skin cell responses.
