Jane Fonda was a major Hollywood icon in the 1960s and 1970s, thanks to her films such as Barbarella and Cat Ballou, and winning a Best Actress Oscar for Klute. But the daughter of actor Henry Fonda was a staunch political activist and used her fame to campaign against the Vietnam War.
Her views made her the focus of media hostility and brought her to the attention of US President Richard Nixon's administration, which was afraid of her influence among young Gls who saw her as a sex symbol.
