Looking for moai meaning
The moai of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) are impressive and have provoked many theories. The monoliths are carved from volcanic stone found on the isolated island and date to between 1100 and 1500 CE. Initially they were thought to be just heads, but excavation has shown us that they had bodies too that had become buried under sediment over the centuries. On average they are four metres high and weigh 12,700 kilograms. With such dimensions, moving them and erecting them was a considerable engineering feat. A total of 887 moai have been identified. Of these only 288 (32 per cent) were successfully transported to their intended site and erected.
