Urban gardens are a win-win It has traditionally been believed that any sort of farming or gardening has a negative impact on ecosystems and biodiversity. This impression has arisen mainly from intensive monoculture-style farming where one, or maybe two, crops are grown on a massive scale. In a new study researchers wanted to establish if the same negative effects could arise from urban or city gardens. It is estimated that by 2030 around 60 per cent of the world’s population will live in cities. Even now, urban farms and gardens provide 15 to 20 per cent of our food supply, so to establish their impact the researchers looked at 28 urban community gardens in California over five years.
