Die vlei is terug!

Elandsbaai se Verlorenvlei doer langs die Weskus was jare lank kurkdroog. Maar in 2023 – en weer in 2024 – het dit genoeg gereën om vol te loop en deur te spoel see toe. Ontmoet van die mense wat deur hierdie moeilike én vreugdevolle tye Elandsbaai hulle tuiste noem.

STORIE TOAST COETZER

Onder ons lê Elandsbaai uitgestrek soos ’n vriendelike glimlag wat al wyer wegkrul na die noorde, waar dit vervaag in ’n waas van seesproei en laatmiddaglig. Ek is saam met Chantal Isaac, eienaar van die Wit Mossel Pot-restaurant op die dorp, en Gerrit Jonker, die plaaslike polisiekaptein. Van die Bobbejaansberg (dié mees westelike deel word genoem Bobbejaanspunt) af kan jy die hele Elandsbaai, wat deur Verlorenvlei in twee gedeel word, mooi sien. Reg onder ons, ingedruk tussen die sandpad en die see, staan ’n paar meestal ongebruikte geboue wat eens die dorp se kreeffabriek was. Elandsbaai-Suid staan duideliker uit omdat dit nader is. Nuwe strandhuise op ’n klossie, en ’n paar ander geboue aan die suidelike oewer van Verlorenvlei. Behalwe vir die treinbrug is daar net een padbrug wat Elandsbaai-Suid…
