Die Land van die Boesmans waardeur die Britse ontdekkingsreisiger William Burchell in 1811 getrek het, se klipperige rante en vaal vlaktes bestaan steeds. Maar die mense met hulle pyle en boë wat met die veld, diere en sterre kon praat, is nêrens te sien nie. Het daar enigiets van die Boesmans oorgebly?

Al waar hulle stories eerlik vertel word, is op swart doleriet waar hulle dit self uitgekap of teen sandsteen gesmeer het. Ons kan daarna kyk en dit probeer verstaan, maar ons sal nooit presies weet wat dit sê nie. Want toe daar nog Boesmans was, wou mense se ore en harte nie luister nie. Deesdae wil almal met die aarde praat. Maar niemand het die taal van die grond, die gras, die wind, reën, korhaan, kelkiewyn of eland by die Boesmans geleer nie. Ek staan by die klipfontein ’n entjie wes van Carnarvon, waar William Burchell op 9 September 1811 die mooiste skets gemaak het van ’n groepie Boesmans…
