I found this a fascinating read, charting the transition from an army that had almost medieval characteristics at the start, to the dominant army in the Middle East, on the eve of World War One. The famous Janissary corps had been forcibly disbanded on 15 June 1826 but the preceding period is briefly discussed to help understand the reforms that followed. The approach is chronological and covers both the Turkish mainland, and developments in other parts of the empire.
