The US Marine Corps 1775-1859 By Ron Field Illustrated by Adam Hook ISBN: 978-1472851543 (Osprey Publishing, 2023) - £14.99 The book follows the standard Osprey Elite format of 64 pages, including eight plates. There is a photograph on most pages, ranging from paintings and drawings to surviving artefacts. The approach is chronological and starts with the marines' founding in 1775 during the Revolutionary War. It then looks at the conflicts the US Marines were embroiled in during the time frame, which covers action against the French in 1794–1800, against Barbary Pirates from 1801– 1805, against Great Britain 1812– 1814, against the indigenous Seminole nation 1835–1841, against Mexico 1846–1847 (from which the famous comment to the Halls of Montezuma is derived), minor landings in Argentina, Nicaragua, Japan, and China during 1852–1853 and finally, in…
