BACK TO BASICS

I am a real believer that when it comes to terrain, form should follow function. As much as I like my terrain to look as realistic as possible it also needs to work in the context of the rules that I am using and in the way my figures are based. Building terrain from scratch has always allowed me to achieve that balance, and one of my favourite materials for constructing buildings is foamcore.

Foamcore is a versatile medium that is not scale specific and so I have used it for numerous projects in everything from ten millimetres to 28 millimetres. It comes in various thicknesses, but for most of my buildings I have found either the three millimetre or five millimetre to be ideal. It is strong and durable regardless of size, yet it is very light and easy to shape with a craft knife. You can find it in most craft or hobby shops in A4 or A3 sheets. I use it to make the walls of the building itself and then build up the detail from there.
