QUICK, LADS! SCATTER!

What is the one thing that every wargame table could do with more of? Scatter terrain! It is almost impossible to have too much! Take a moment to look outside. No matter where you are, you will not just see large features like houses and trees. You will also see outbuildings, log piles, dustbins, benches, signposts, and monuments. Scatter terrain not only ‘places’ the table but also forms a strong narrative about the location, adding an important level of immersion.

Some scatter terrain is very specific to locations, whilst other pieces are universal no matter the place or period. I have chosen three simple pieces that will work on almost any table – a statue, a well, and a shed/outbuilding, so you will find here, something you can make whatever period you are playing. I have provided detailed step by step instructions for building the three examples, but below I have summarized the main steps to consider when approaching this project. Look for inspiration: look at photographs and paintings or read accounts of the theatre you are covering and make a list of items you can see that would make good scatter pieces.
