THE CATTLE RUSTLERS

The theme for this issue is raids, and therein lay a problem. How do you visually illustrate a raid? At first, the suggestion from the editor was looting Vikings, but that made for a very passive scene. The next idea was Scythians, which would have been very colourful, but again, did it really capture the idea of a raid? The solution was cowboys, cattle rustling!

The wild west was always a favourite of mine, from iconic movies like the Good the Bad and the Ugly to games like Red Dead Redemption, and of course on tabletop with wargames like Dead Man's Hand. The scene itself was going to be cowboys yee-hawing their way out of the ranch with the rustled longhorns herded before them. I did originally paint a ranch hand shouting in alarm (the Alarmist from Knuckleduster), but he just was not dramatic enough, so I replaced him with a grizzled old timer not about to let these whippersnappers get away with it.
