THIS GAMING LIFE ONE OF THE QUESTIONS

One of the questions I'm asked all the time is, ‘where do you get ide- as for games’, and my stock answer is always the same: anywhere, everywhere and occasionally elsewhere. Inspiration might arrive via a film or TV programme, from fiction, from a historical account, or simply from a mechanical idea for how game interplay might work. Sometimes a conversation might trigger a thought which suddenly cascades into unfettered ambition and before you know it, you're leaping out of the bath shouting ‘Eureka!’ and hastily scribbling the basis for some new endeavour. In the case of my latest project, the idea sprang from the pages of Casino Royale by Ian Fleming.

COLUMN Armed with that revelation, you might be forgiven for thinking of some detailed skirmish-style wargame based upon the world of espionage, gadgetry and supervillains. You would, however, be dead wrong. In fact, I've been messing around with a new space combat game which I call – being a matter-of-fact sort of chap – Space Battles. What has starship combat got to do with James Bond you might well ask. The connection, in this case, is not so much with said special agent, but rather his penchant for a specific game: baccarat. Bond's mission turns upon a game of baccarat in which he aims to bankrupt the baddie of the piece, Le Chiffre. Fleming finds it expedient to have Bond explain to Vesper how the game is played.
