SWORDS, RIFLES, AND DUST

A good cavalry charge is something that always looks fantastic in war films, no matter what. When I was offered the opportunity to make this issue's diorama for the cover depicting a charge, I leapt at the chance — but which charge? “Just not with knights; it's far too obvious!” I was told.

Luckily, 1898 Miniaturas has released a very nice range of Moroccan cavalry for the beginning of the 20th century. A formidable enemy for the French Foreign Legion, they posed a huge challenge for the Spanish troops in the protectorate in Morocco. The theme was set, and the figures were ideal to show one of those charges against the Spaniards during the Riff War, in “la Yebala” under their leader El Raisuni (El Raisuli). The central figure is great, and I think he looks just like Sean Connery from The Wind and the Lion! I chose several different poses from the miniatures: some with head covering and some bareheaded, with a shaved scalp but the little pony tail. Similarly, with weapons I was looking for a mix of firearms and swords.…
