A HEROIC DEFENCE

As Napoleon was facing overwhelming odds with two large, allied armies gradually moving towards Paris, he saw an opportunity to ambush Blucher's Army of Silesia. But to give him the critical window of opportunity, Nogent-sur-Seine – which blocked the path of the Army of Bohemia to the south – would have to be held for 48 hours. This task was given to a mere 1,200 men with civilian support, who with-stood countless enemy charges and overwhelming odds.
A HEROIC DEFENCE
The allies had invaded France at the start of January and slowly lumbered forwards, pushing Napoleon's much smaller forces back as they went. By early February, morale in the French army was low and Paris seemed to be a prize that would soon be within reach of the allies. Aware of the strategic significance of Nogent-sur-Seine, situated on a direct route to Paris with its bridge over the river intact, Napoleon had already reconnoitred the town and given orders in January for earthworks to be thrown up around it, for the buildings to be prepared for defence, and for the bridge to be mined. Briefly visiting from 7th to 9th February, Napoleon reiterated the importance he attached to the town but would have been disappointed to see the defences incomplete.…
