“ALL MINIATURES SHOULD BE EQUAL”

The evening before a club night, I realize that I have nothing scheduled to play, so I call up my gaming buddy Jeff and say, “Are you up to doing a World War II meeting engagement and we can both bring a late war platoon and some support?” Nothing fancy, just your typical club evening. The next day as he enters the clubroom, the table is ready with terrain centred around Caen – just rolling hills and a few woods. He comments on the table and then pulls out an expertly painted Waffen SS force with a Tiger and a couple of Hanomags. Seeing my face, he asks me what is wrong. Then I pull out my Fallschirmjäger platoon. Who would have thought we were going to fight a civil war that night?

Has this happened to me? Well, outside of a Flames of War tournament I watched, no, but it could. Gamers love the flashiest and 'best' toys. If the game is in the latter part of the Cold War, the tank of choice is the M1A1 Abrams, although I am partial to the Merkava and Leopard. For World War II the gamers have a higher percentage of King Tigers and Panthers in their collections then the Germans ever had access to. It goes for most eras - you get the point. Yes, we may be in a rut. We know which troops are war winners, or at least we know which forces work best with our favourite rules.
