THE SECOND BATTLE OF LANDSHUT, 1809 FREISTAAT BAYERN

When I was asked to do the cover for this edition, at first, I did not want to go down the Napoleonics route. Themed 'Bavaria', I thought there is so much out there, I do not need to get into the nitty gritty of very distinctive uniforms that seemingly changed daily, their accompanying buttons, and what not. And yet, as a Bavarian myself, I wanted something easily recognizable. So, at least a Bavarian flag, or distinctive uniforms. Ideally both.

The briefing was that it had to be centred on what is modern Bavaria, so later conflicts that would have had what I wanted to show, like the wars of 1866 and 1870–1871, or even the early months of WW1, were out. So, back to the drawing board it was. The Thirty Years' War was a strong contender, yet when I remembered the beautiful Napoleonics range from Piano Wargames, done by a fellow Bavarian no less, I was settled. My first foray into the wars of the little Corsican was about to begin. Bavaria allied with France out of necessity as part of the Confederation of the Rhine, primarily to protect itself from the power of Austria.
