GET YOUR MINATURES PAINTED QUICKLY AND EASILY THE SLAP-CHOP OR GRISAILLE METHOD

Back in WS&S 106, we discussed the advantages and drawbacks of using Contrast-like paints (intense washes or inks). This time, we will approach another fast-painting method, the so-called Slap-Chop method, which involves applying intense washes over a black-and-white grisaille. Although this technique may appear novel, it is one of the oldest miniature painting techniques.

The Contrast painting method is quick and easy but not optimal. They have two main issues: 1) the finish is dirty-looking with poor definition; and 2) the colours appear overly bright - suitable for fantasy miniatures but out of place for historicals. The black-and-white grisaille method gives the colours a more muted and realistic appearance. Here, the two methods are shown side by side. We are using the new plastic Normans from Victrix Limited in 28 mm, painted as Iberian Chrisitians. FINAL VERDICT Overall, I generally prefer the SlapChop method over the classic Contrast one; the colours are darker and more realistic with greater contrast between highlights and shadows.
