A FRENCH DECEPTION AT VERNEUIL, 17 AUGUST 1424 A SECOND AGINCOURT

After the Battle of Agincourt, the English position in the Hundred Years’ War had never been better. The spoils of the battle gave Henry enough money to pursue another campaign in France in the years that followed. That campaign was concluded with the Treaty of Troyes in 1420. Henry was betrothed to Catherine de Valois, daughter of the French king Charles VI. The Dauphin, successor to the French throne, Charles VII, was disinherited.

Henry was also made regent of France and successor to the throne, a right that was also granted to his children. Unfortunately for Henry, he died in 1422, before he could inherit, but his right to the French throne now passed to his infant son Henry VI. John, Duke of Bedford, was named his regent. The Treaty of Troyes inevitably led to dissention among the nobles of the realms. There were those that honoured the treaty, from now on called ‘English’, and those who did not, who acknowledged the right of Charles VII as heir to the French throne, henceforth known as ‘French’.
