PAINTING GABIONS

As a miniature and scenery painter it is hard to imagine not painting using brown: musket stocks, leather, monks’ habits, and horses, to name but a few items currently on my painting table. The subtitle of this piece is a quote from Lee Blessing. What he says rings true, but brown can still be great to work with. While I’m applying the techniques I describe to gabions, they could easily be applied to other wood features.
PAINTING GABIONS
The inspiration for this article comes from previous modelling articles from Stephen Tunmore. I read with interest his articles on painting red, yellow, and white (see WS&S 111 & 112) as they are generally considered to be the most difficult of colours to master. In this piece I will be taking the easy route: working with the colour brown. I had a few cast resin 1/56-scale gabions from Debris of War to paint and looked at the elements involved: wickerwork (brown), sawn wood (brown), logs (brown), and earth … you guessed it, more brown. The challenge here is to portray the variety of natural materials using colours from the same family. Achieving sufficient contrast and definition will be a struggle.
