WATER TOWER HILL

As the Japanese advanced towards Singapore City in early 1942, a torrent of spent British, Australian, and Indian units fell back, adding to the confusion. The British attempted to form a new stop line south of the MacRitchie Reservoir. Water Tower Hill on the Adam Road was held by A Company of the 1st Cambridgeshires and would be the scene of ferocious fighting on Friday 13 February 1942.

The 1st Cambridgeshires arrived on the afternoon of 12 February and started to dig in, but the soil and sporadic Japanese shelling made digging hard work and the foxholes and trenches were not really adequate for what lay ahead. The spearhead of the attacks on Water Tower Hill was made by the veteran Japanese 41st Regiment from the Fukuyama region. The troops in this unit were battle hardened and confident, but also exhausted and running short of supplies. The 11th Regiment (used in scenarios 2 and 4) was also a veteran unit who had conducted much of the hard fighting across Singapore in the previous days.
