It may appear at first that most peasant revolts in history were doomed to failure, but the actual histories of these revolts are far more nuanced. For instance, during the 1381 revolts in England, a few hundred were hanged for their direct involvement, but the majority returned home. The aristocracy had learned not to push the peasantry too far. The same is true of the 1525 German Peasants’ War: while thousands died, some former rebels were allowed to pay a fine and return to their old lives.
