Our sailing brethren refer to crew as movable ballast, needing friends and family aboard to move from one side to the other in order to better balance the boat. Keeping crew on the constant move is a normal part of many a day sail or cruise. While not needed to that degree aboard powerboats, we motorboat skippers should consider our crew movable to the extent that we can increase safety and enhance performance. Q:STUCK! Dear Mick, while greasing my outboard steering, the grease gun got stuck on the Zerk fitting. How can I prevent this? Should I use a different tip? Mel TobinChicago, Illinois A: The tip or coupler of a grease gun is in two parts that screw together. These can become too tightly screwed together, and when that happens, they grip the grease fitting too tightly. Cure the problem by unscrewing the two parts of the coupler and then putting them back together no more than finger-tight. You’ll note that the one part nearest the hose has a hex fitting that accepts a wrench and that the other part is knurled for fingers to grip. WINTERIZING A BOAT’S POTABLE WATER SYSTEM

Much has been written about the importance of winterizing the cooling systems in marine engines, but depending on the boat, water might lurk elsewhere. For example, many boats have potable water stored in a tank below deck and delivered via pumps to faucets, showers, heads and freshwater washdown spigots. These systems also require proper winterization for long-term boat storage in regions subject to temperatures of 32 degrees F or below. Otherwise, the H2O can freeze, expand and crack components such as faucets, fittings, hoses, pumps, accumulator tanks and even the water-storage tank itself, resulting in a hefty repair bill. Even in warm locales, boats stored or disused for more than a month should drain potable water systems to avoid stale, smelly, foul-tasting drinking water. This project is best undertaken after…

HOW TO SIPHON LIQUIDS

Boaters may run into the need to siphon fuel, water or another liquid. Whether you’re removing 65 gallons of suspect gas from a used-boat purchase (like I had to), or emptying a livewell or fish box when a pump breaks, siphoning is quick, easy and relatively safe. You can siphon just about any liquid, but it’s most common with combustibles because siphoning is safer and less expensive than pumping. MAKE A PLAN Siphoning only works when the liquid to be removed is above the destination. The hose can go uphill for a bit, but its final destination needs to be downhill. For example, if your boat is on a trailer, you can set a gas can on the gunwale and flow into your main tank, but you can’t set that…

Greases are semisolid lubricants possessing a high initial viscosity. Upon the application of sliding pressure — known to engineering types as shear — the viscosity drops to that of the base oil used in the grease. Grease is used as a generic term, and while the old saw that “any grease is better than no grease” usually proves true, there are specific formulations that will serve the lubrication needs of your boat’s engines, trailer and accessories better than others. Here are some points to ponder prior to purchasing grease for specific applications. SNAPS AND ZIPPERS You don’t want dark red, green or blue smears on your boat’s canvas, yet you need the snaps and zippers to work well. Our testing revealed a boat that runs fast, rides smooth and affords an immense amount of deck space. The aft cockpit interior width measured more than 11 feet wide by 5 feet 4 inches long. The 26-inch-tall gunwales offer plenty of security in rough seas. Wide walkways aside the center console and level deck throughout offer easy access to and from the forward cockpit, which maintains its width thanks to the characteristics of the cat design. I was just as tickled to slip the lines, head for open water and put the throttle down. The twin turbocharged CXO300 features an aluminum crankcase displacing 4 liters. The British-built outboard also has direct fuel injection and is EPA Tier III compliant for diesel emissions. On Saturday 7th July, Alex Luther and the Chasing Canguro team celebrated their incredible World Record Mediterranean marathon, which finished in Cervia, Italy. On the evening of Thursday 5th July, Alex reached his objective to break the previously unbeaten World Record set in 1970 by his grandfather, Harry Luther, waterskiing from Tangiers, Morocco, and tracking the Spanish, French, Monaco and Italian coastlines to Pula, Croatia. “It feels surreal.
