We left you last month with the basic short block assembled and the bottom end turning over nicely with no tight spots or noticeable resistance, so now it's time to start fitting the ancillaries. Air-cooled VW engines rely on their oiling system for lubrication, but also for cooling, so it’s vitally important to check the condition of your oil pump prior to installation. Ours was showing obvious signs of wear, with deep grooves on the face and bottom of the pump body where the gears had been eating away at the material. There was also quite a significant burr on the drive lug, so we decided to play it safe and fit a replacement. That added £40 to our build total, but we figured that was a small price to…
