When I’m photographing feature vehicles, or chatting to owners at events, one of my go-to questions is simply, ‘Why old VWs?’ Typically, the response will be something relating to a childhood memory, inspiration from an old magazine feature, or Herbie. My interest in classic cars almost certainly stems from my father’s love of old British and American cars, but also partly from the colourful VWs I’d see buzzing around Southend as a teenager.
My father was always tinkering with old cars, and I learnt everything I know about metalwork, welding and painting from working alongside him at the ol’ ‘Bob’s Paint & Speed Shop.’
