From £500 wreck to Best of Show at Le Bug Show, Michel Muster’s 181 and caravan combo is off-the-scale cool

“I was first offered this 181 in 2009. At the time, I had no idea what it was” I like to think I’ve driven almost every version of air-cooled Volkswagen produced, and yet a 181 / 182 still evades me. The truth is, I’d bloody love one. Clearly, I need to rectify this situation! If you ever wondered about the numbers, the 181 is left-hand drive and the 182 is the somewhat rarer, right-hand drive version. In the US, on the other hand, they’re comically known as the Thing, whilst the Italians prefer the moniker Pescaccia, relating to hunting or fishing.
