Roy Maple has returned to the VW fold with a storming Ghia reminiscent of good times spent with Der Kleiner Kampfwagens in his youth

Like so many of us, Roy Maple bought his first VW out of necessity. He was young, in need of transportation, and had a limited budget to spend. Growing up in southern California, he’d been aware of the thriving VW culture all around him, so naturally gravitated toward the iconic brand. “I’ve always been surrounded by Bugs,” Roy says with a smile. “They were everywhere when I was growing up, and I loved how customisable they were.” His first car, then, was a 1960 Beetle, bought for just $150 when he was 16. “I didn’t know much at the time,” he admits jovially, “but I learned quickly.
