Bob recreates a wooden bridge diorama to remind him of time spent in rural Germany in the 1970s

In 1970, while stationed in Schwabisch Gmuend, Germany, with the US army, I had a favorite gasthaus I would frequent. I would drive my ’66 1300 Bug along a narrow, curvy road in the nearby forest and cross over several old-style, single-lane, wooden plank bridges spanning a winding creek to get there. These bridges were typical of countryside driving in Germany back then, and I’ll never forget the unusual and distinct ‘plipity-plopity’ sound the tyres made slapping the uneven wooden planks while driving over them. All of which gave me the idea for this special project. When I picked up an old, rusty railroad bridge designed for a train set, I had just what I needed to put the plan into action.
