The concept of a small, economical car for the people began in the early 1930s, and the ‘Volkswagen’ was announced at the 1933 Berlin Auto Show, with the first running models displayed at the '39 Berlin Auto Show. Because of the huge excitement surrounding the arrival of the KdF Wagen – remember, at the time of its introduction, the German people were under the impression they would all eventually own one – many German toy manufacturers enthusiastically tooled up to produce their own miniature versions. Amongst the better known companies were Märklin, Tipp&Co, Huki, Distler, G. Fischer, Köra, F. Hörndlein, CKO, JNF, Günthermann and Volk, but that’s not an exhaustive list.
