I have just been reading about the sale of the oldest Beetle in Sweden at auction for £116,000. It was expected, assuming it goes through, to set a new world record. The 1948 example was one of just 55 exported to the country that year and it was sold having undergone a full bare-metal restoration using new old stock or good used parts. It’s thought that no more than 30 or so cars have survived from this era worldwide. Surpassing its pre-sale estimate, the hammer price exceeds the $128,700 (roughly £98,000) paid for the 1963 Beetle used in the 1977 blockbuster, Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo and 1980’s Herbie Goes Bananas which sold at the Barrett-Jackson’s Palm Beach auction earlier this year.
