We’ve all heard people say that air-cooled VWs are expensive to buy and maintain, but are they really? It’s certainly true that prices being asked for classic VWs are way higher today than they used to be, with some of the more desirable models approaching that asked for more exotic classics. It’s also true that, if you pay a garage to fix your car, it gets expensive very quickly. With hourly labour rates north of £65 (+ VAT) commonplace, just one day’s work on your car will set you back almost £600. That’s without any parts or consumables. A solid week of welding and bodywork restoration could quite conceivably consume £3,000. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Old VWs were designed to be fixed, and to be straightforward…
