PICTURE houses, movie theatres, film palaces. Call them what you will, but all of those are wrong. They are CINEMAS, and chances are that wherever you live in Britain, you are no more than twenty miles from one, possibly more in the Highlands of Scotland or on one of them little islands right up at the top. The cinema is a place to gather with friends, watch the latest Hollywood blockbuster and buy bladder-bursting amounts of watered-down generic cola, and we love it. But how much do we actually know about these enormous, lightless buildings sitting on the edges of retail parks? What are they made of? Who owns them?
